Externship in EFT
for Couples

LMFT are presenting
this Externship in EFT. The Externship is the first level of
training for learning EFT and for becoming a Certified EFT
Therapist. The course teaches mental health professionals the
basic clinical skills necessary to become competent as an EFT couples therapist.
The training includes readings, lectures, discussions, videotape examples, and experiential skills practice.
Two live couple sessions are scheduled for each Externship. See

Participants will receive a training manual developed for
this course.
It is suggested that
participants read: The Practice of Emotionally
Focused Couple Therapy: Creating Connection (Johnson,
2004) and Becoming an Emotionally Focused Couple Therapist: The Workbook
(Johnson et al., 2005). Both books are published by Routledge:

Learning Objectives:
Participants will be able ....
Day 1:
Introduction to Couple Distress, Attachment Theory, Process of EFT
1. to describe the nature and causes of couple distress
2. to describe basic Attachment Theory and how it informs EFT.
3. to describe the systemic and experiential theoretical
influences on EFT.
4. to describe change factors involve in a couple moving from
distress to recovery.
5. to describe the Nine Steps and Three Stages of EFT.
6. to demonstrate the basic empathy skills that are central to
the therapeutic process in EFT.
Day 2: Stage 1 (steps 1-4 of EFT) Assessment, Alliance
1. describe assessment
skills in EFT (Steps 1 and 2).
2. to demonstrate how to create a therapeutic alliance using:
empathic attunement, validation, acceptance, genuineness.
3. to demonstrate how to enter into the experience of each
partner to discover how each constructs his/her experience of
their relationship.
4. to demonstrate how to track and frame the sequences of
interaction that perpetuate couple’s distress.
5. to frame a couple’s negative cycle (e.g., pursue/withdraw)
emphasizing attachment needs (e.g., closeness, connection,
importance of the other, fear of loss).
Day 3:
Stage II (Steps 5-7) Change Events and EFT Interventions
1. to describe the three change events in EFT: de-escalation,
withdrawer engagement and pursuer softening.
2. to demonstrate the skills of accessing, exploring and
heightening emotion.
3. to describe the skills of facilitating acceptance.
4. to describe the process of withdrawer reengagement and
pursuer softening
1. to describe systemic and experiential theoretical influences
that inform EFT interventions.
2. to describe the basic EFT interventions for working with
emotion, ie reflection, validation, evocative responding, empathic
conjecture and heightening.
3 to demonstrate how to use RISSSC to heighten emotional
experience.
4. to describe how to create simple interactions using
enactments.
Day 4:
Stage III (Steps 8-9) and Becoming An EFT Therapist, Attachment
Injuries, Working with Trauma and EFT
1. to describe steps 8 and 9 of EFT
2. to explain attachment injuries from an Attachment Theory
perspective.
3. to describe the process of resolving attachment injuries.
4. to explain the impact of trauma from an attachment theory
perspective 5. to describe how EFT is used in working with
couples with a partner who is a trauma survivor.
6. to describe the impact of affairs from the perspective of
attachment theory.

Cancellation Policy
If you cancel up to 14 days prior to the workshop date the
Washington Baltimore Center for EFT will refund your payment minus
20%. If you cancel within 14 days of the event your payment
will be refunded 50%.

From Baltimore: Drive west on
U.S. 40 to U.S. Route 29 South. Take the Route 175 East exit

From Annapolis and East: Drive
west on Route 50 to I097 North (Baltimore) to Route 32 West

Travel
Information:
Driving:
Columbia Maryland is between Washington, DC and Baltimore just off
route I95. It is about half hour's to an hour drive from most parts of
Washington and Baltimore.
Columbia is about 4 hours from New York, 2 hours from
Philadelphia, and 2 hours from Richmond. See above for driving
directions from Baltimore and Washington.
Airports:
The conference is about 13 miles (20 minutes)
from the Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI)
and 36 miles (50 minutes) from the Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport.
Train:
Amtrak train has a station at Baltimore Washington Airport with service to
Philadelphia, New
York and other destinations with taxi and limo service to Columbia,
Maryland about 13 miles (20 minutes).

***The Studio Plus Hotel is the
closest hotel and is within walking distance. Trainees have
said that it is adequate but not luxurious.
***We have also been told that the
Columbia Hilton is a very nice facility and has a free shuttle on
week days that will take you up to five miles (the training center
is within five miles). On Saturday you can catch a taxi to the
training center. Several trainees highly recommended this
hotel.
Continuing Education
Credits and
EFT Certification:
This program includes 30 hours of
training in EFT. The Maryland Center for EFT, LLC DBA Washington
Baltimore Center for EFT is approved by the
American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education
for psychologists. The Washington Baltimore Center for EFT maintains
responsibility for this program and its content.
The Maryland Board of Social Work
Examiners certifies that this program meets the criteria for 30
credit hours of Category I continuing education for social workers
and associates licensed in Maryland.
The Externship is necessary to fulfill requirements for becoming a
Certified EFT Therapist through the International Center for
Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy.
